    A thematic map is a map that focuses on a specific theme or subject area. This is in contrast to general reference maps, which show the variety of features—geological, geographical, political—together. Thematic maps use the base data, such as coastlines, boundaries and places, only as points of reference for the feature being mapped. A thematic map displays information regarding a specific data set, such as the average population density in a certain area. A thematic map does not show general geographic features, such as city locations, unless used as a reference point. Thematic maps were first developed during the 17th century.
